About the RoleUnder the administrative direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, utilize principles of outpatient/emergency care management to provide for the delivery of patient care to individuals and families with emergent/urgent/outpatient needs. Provides administrative direction to development and evaluation of all ER Techs and Nursing personnel assigned to the Emergency and Cardiopulmonary Department. Works with medical staff in the development of standards of care. Contributes to nursing and the CQCH organization through support of philosophy and objectives, education efforts and research efforts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Provides for the delivery of safe, economical and efficient nursing care.
2. Coordinates care with interdisciplinary team.
3. Acts as liaison between patient, family and physician/medical provider.
4. Sets specific standards and objectives for the Emergency Department and Outpatient treatment functions of the facility. Recruits, interviews and selects staff accordingly.
5. Communicates changes in policy and procedure and other appropriate communication to staff and provides feedback from staff to the Nursing Administration.
6. Ensures that care is delivered to each patient according to standard and is documented in the clinical record.
7. Monitors patient revenues and expenses, operating expenses and capital expense items.
8. Monitors unit staffing and bases decisions on patient needs and acuity.
9. Seeking assistance from an appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems.
10. Maintains proper equipment and supplies.
11. Maintains required records and reports. Takes a leadership role in the development, review and revision of policy and procedure.
12. Provides for professional growth and development of patient care staff.
13. Actively participates in organization/nursing committees and in performance improvement activities.
14. Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward goals.
15. Ensures that the hospital is notified of equipment in need of repair. Coordinates with Biomed when new equipment is installed within the department.
16. Serves as a clinical resource person and assists nursing personnel in developing basic and advanced skills in crisis management and emergency care.
17. Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and professional development.
18. Conduct yearly performance/competency evaluations for staff; conducts evaluations for new staff prior to completion of the three-month probationary period.
19. Counsel employees regarding employee health issues and provides referrals to outside resources as needed.
20. Participate in orientation and staff development for all new and continuing employees of the organization.
21. Monitors patient satisfactions scores and implement plans to improve them.
22. Investigates all SQSS report submissions regarding Med/Surg and completes "Just Do It" reports within 14 days.
23. Assures confidentiality of patient records and information/HIPPA compliance
24. Demonstrates an ability to organize and achieve quality performance, maximum productivity and efficiency to meet the daily routine and extraordinary demands of the job
25. Constantly assesses the working environment for potential occupational health hazards and recommends appropriate changes.
26. Provides an example of professional behavior, appearance, maturity and accountability.
27. Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward goals.
28. Participate in the Nursing Leadership call for weekend coverage.
29. Conduct bimonthly department meetings. Posts agenda with minutes for anyone who cannot attend.
30. Acts as liaison for medical director of department and executive nursing leadership.
31. Responsible for regularly reviewing existing policies and procedures. Drafting new policies and procedures to reflect changes in standards and regulations according to the department's needs.
QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS
1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN and/or certificate in nursing specialty preferred.
2. Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in Arizona.
3. Two to five years of recent clinical experience in ER Nursing required. Progressive leadership experience and history of positive interactions with various levels of emergency response personnel, medical providers, and staff.
4. Competence in the emergency management of patients across the age spectrum.
5. Current certification in ACLS, PALS (for PALS, must obtain within 6 months of hire if not current) and CPR. Possess or actively seeking CEN Certification and/or advanced trauma training.
6. Good physical and mental health is required because of long periods of standing, walking and working in crisis environment. Must be well coordinated and able to move about freely.
7. Possess stamina to withstand stress and strain and use both judgment and imitative.
8. Requires emotional stability, good memory, patience, skill and tact in dealing with others. Ability to both listen and direct.
9. Able to function effectively under stressful situations.
