What You Will Do
This position is a health care professional who is responsible for performing a number of patient-related support services to ensure that the Health/Counseling Services center runs smoothly. They apply their extensive clinical knowledge of polices and procedures regarding patient insurance, account maintenance, and collections. This position checks in patients, verifies student patient enrollment status, reviews previous medical records and appointment information, ensures current information regarding demographics and medical records are up-to-date. Enters information into electronic medical record system. Informs new patients of clinic procedures and guidelines. Arranges to have patient escorted to examination/treatment area. At the conclusion of patient appointment, reviews charge tickets for accuracy and application of professional service charges. Provides information on policies, procedures, and services provided as well as responds to routine inquiries from patients, families, internal points of contact, and Counseling and Health Service Staff; secures patient information about illness and health problems. Utilizes independent judgment to schedule and triage medical and mental health appointment to best meet the needs of the student and clinical practice. Provides any pertinent information to medical staff. Monitors and addresses questions and concerns presented through departmental CougarCare email. Independently manages the immunization records compliance and collection process.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Any one or any combination totaling one (1) year (12 months), from the categories below:
A. Work experience comparable to that performed at the Medical Office Assistant level or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
B. Work experience in a health care facility such as a doctor's, dentist's, or hospital's office; which involved record keeping, working with the public, direct patient contact, answering telephones, and working with medical terminology.
C. Graduation from an accredited medical secretarial or paramedical program, such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, or medical secretary.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. degree
Working knowledge of medical terminology.
Working knowledge of routine office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of state immunization requirements regarding international and domestic collegiate population
Ability to work with sensitive patient/client information and maintain confidentiality
Ability to keyboard accurately and maintain comprehensive files electronically
Ability to reconcile monetary transactions accurately
Ability to remain calm under pressure while working with the public, both face to face and via telephone
Ability to use independent judgment and determine appropriate department resources
Ability to work with persons from a variety of cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
Ability to perform tasks requiring the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
Effective verbal and written communication skills; particularly in explaining rules, policies and their interpretations

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.
