Description
Job Summary:The Postdoctoral Research Associate is responsible for performing independent research by developing novel methodology for the preparation of small molecule macrocycles and/or polymeric materials for medicinal and materials applications; designing and conducting procedures and analytical tests; maintaining laboratory instrumentation; providing internal, external reports, participating in the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.
Duties & Essential Job Functions:
1. Creates experimental results by designing and applying modern synthetic procedures.
2. Evaluates experimental results by purifying and analyzing products of synthetic experiments; investigating reactivity patterns and mechanistic detail.
3. Documents results by maintaining an organized and readable laboratory notebook in English suitable for patent protection.
4. Maintains safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards; adhering to legal regulations.
5. Ensures operation of tools and equipment used in the job by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
6. Publicizes findings by developing and presenting results in conferences; providing periodic reports in oral and/or written form to supervisor and research group.
7. Maintains continuity among work groups by orienting and training new group members on procedures; documenting and communicating actions, irregularities and continuing needs.
8. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
• Ph.D. in Chemistry, with an emphasis on organic or polymer.
• 2 years in multistep organic synthesis including small molecules and/or macromolecules/polymers. Strong background in the isolation and characterization of organic molecules including but not limited to HPLC, GPC, SEC, IR, NMR, mass spectrometry, solubility determinations, titration analysis. Experience handling and disposing of potent and highly toxic natural products or drugs. Experience in peptide or carbohydrate experience advantageous. Experience in polymer characterization or bioinorganic chemistry advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Knowledge of presentation and training techniques.
• Knowledge of laboratory and research techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of the design and execution of animal models of disease.
• Knowledge of specific to the requirements identified above.
• Ability to perform research and document results; ability to communicate effectively.

Work Environment:
• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.

• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
