Summary:
The Celina Public Library Technical Services Supervisor has a vision for libraries in a new age, is innovative, and thinks ahead to the future. The Technical Services Supervisor is responsible for providing materials to the public in a timely manner through acquisitions, cataloging, processing, operational software management, and maintaining catalog records. Flexibility, project management, process management, supervision, communication, motivation, innovation, and a passion for public libraries are key factors for the position.
This position description intends to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by the incumbent(s) in this position. Requirements
Essential Job Duties:
- Manages the Library's technical operations, focusing on delivering exceptional customer service through acquisitions, processing, cataloging, and collection selection.
- Creates and carries out policies, procedures, and established best practices as part of the Library Management Team.
- Assists in monitoring and evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; Stays abreast of changing trends and technology in public library operations; assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; and identifies opportunities for improvement and assists in directing the implementation of changes.
- Supervises staff, prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring exemplary staff training levels, ensuring employees follow policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary decisions or recommendations to the Library Director.
- Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the Library’s annual operating budget, including forecasting, approving invoices, budget transfers, and other financial documents.
- Oversee operational money handling for library services in collaboration with the Access Services Supervisor.
- Participates in preparing grant documents for special funding and monitors grant activities and reporting requirements.
- Plans, organizes, and directs a periodic inventory of all items in the Library’s holdings.
- Supervises reviewing and correcting errors and inconsistencies between the catalog and actual holdings.
- Maintain ILS database bibliographic and item records.
- Contributes to the department’s strategic plan and long-term and short-term goals and projects as part of the Library Management Team, and has in-charge duties in the absence of the Library Director.
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with vendors, donors, and other external agencies/individuals.
Other Important Duties:
- May be subject to working extended hours, nights, and weekends.
- Represents the library at various service club functions as assigned.
- May conduct formal or informal training workshops and sessions for Library staff and various library boards.
- Travels to attend meetings, conferences, and training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in professional development organizations and committees.
- Regular and consistent attendance at the assigned work hours is essential.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Provides instructions and supervises the Technical Services Unit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern professional library principles, functions, methods, best practices, industry standards, and administration.
- Knowledge of the management, inventory, and cataloging of library collections using SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows.
- Skill in applying and complying with City policies and procedures.
- Proficiency in using computers and related library services equipment, hardware, and software.
- Skill in forward-thinking, high-level library planning.
- Skill in planning, developing, and implementing departmental procedures and objectives.
- Skill in effectively supervising and delegating duties to assigned staff.
- Skill in effective oral and written communications.
- Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:
- Master’s degree in library science (MLS) from an American Library Association-accredited university.
- Three (3) years of full-time experience in technical library services, integrated library system maintenance, database administration, or related field. In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part, or all, of the required elements.
- One year of supervisory experience in Technical or Library Services is preferred.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and MVR check.
- Must possess a State of Texas Driver’s License.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in a public library environment.
- May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing and data entry and possess sufficient vision to use a computer monitor.
- May be subject to occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting, such as retrieving or replacing books and materials.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and push for a 75-pound initial push of a loaded materials cart.
Equipment and Tools Utilized:
- The equipment includes self-check kiosks, print release stations, iPads, personal computers, copiers, calculators, fax machines, cash registers, other standard office equipment, book trucks, and department or personal vehicles.
